Plants Arrive
You know when spring is just around the corner, and no, it’s
not when the first Cadbury’s Crème Eggs are spotted
in the local supermarket aisles! No, far more exciting is when,
if by magic, masses of pots containing the fresh green shoots of
rooted cuttings and seedlings descend into the garden centre. There’s
no doubt about it, seeing these plants ever so slightly gets those
‘green’ fingers twitching with the anticipation that
the new growing season is well and truly underway! Well, this season
is now with us and we’re stacked to the gunnels with a wide
range of young bedding plants and shortly vegetable plants, too!
This year we’ve increased our range dramatically to reflect
the shift into this popular market and we have sourced UK growers
who offer plenty of varieties to tempt you with, including hardy,
patio, trailing and bush fuchsias, F1 Hybrid Geraniums (Pelargoniums),
bush and trailing Petunias as well as part-grown seedlings
including Impatiens (busy lizzies), Begonia semperflorens,
Geraniums, Lobelia, Petunias and the
usual basket plants species such as Helichrysum, Verbena, Nepeta,
Plectranthus and Lamium.
The nitty gritty: The cutting raised young plants are sold in net
pots (4.6cm) and are priced from 89p with larger plug plants (6cm)
ranging from £1.30 each, depending on the variety. The pots
of seedlings cost £2.99 and £3.49 respectively. We offer
quantity discounts on all our young plant range… so, don’t
delay, and get planting today!
STOP PRESS: Plug-U-Grow plants now in.
By
special request
If you are looking for a larger sized tree, shrub or fruit tree
then now is a good time to speak to us about bare-rooted stock.
We use a range of Belgium and Dutch suppliers and are able to offer
a ‘special order’ service to our Garden Centre customers,
so if you are tempted to splash out on a tree or a more unusual
plant then this is great time to check us out.
This season, we’ve had much interest in the wonderful snow-white
stems of Betula jacquemontii for bold group plantings or
more unusual trees, like the handkerchief tree. You might be tempted
by Alan Titchmarsh’s favourite tree, the katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum
japonica), you know the one that smells of burnt sugar at leaf
fall.
Other popular requests have included Mountain Ash varieties, the
Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa bignonioides) in both its green
and yellow leaf forms, the wedding cake tree (Cornus controversa
Variegata), Liquidamber, Winter Flowering Cherries (Prunus
subhirtella) and how about this one… Ugni molinae
Flambeau (honestly this is a plant you can grow in the UK)!!
Seed Potatoes, Onion Sets and Garlic
Seed potatoes are now in stock, so for those enthusiasts who want
lots of different varieties, do come early to get the best choice.
There are fourteen varieties of first earlies, eight varieties of
second earlies and eleven varieties of main crop. We also have 6
new and unusual continental varieties this year: Alpha, Bintje,
Doré, Irene, Sirtema, Spunta.
Also the onion sets and garlic are also in stock so the new veggie
season is definitely with us.
