Sweet chestnuts on a young tree at the Garden Centre.

Fast growing, deciduous tree introduced by the Romans. Large lance shaped mid-green leaves and masses of small, heavily scented cream flowers on showy catkins produced on young shoots in July. Edible sweet chestnuts form in favourable years. Good coppice tree. Needs an open sunny position to fruit well. TREE 30ft x 20ft (9m x 6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 60ft (18m).
