CHESTNUT, SWEET (Castanea sativa)
Sweet chestnuts on a young tree at the Garden Centre.

Fast growing, deciduous tree introduced by the Romans. Large lance shaped mid-green leaves and masses of small, heavily scented cream flowers on showy catkins produced on young shoots in July. Edible sweet chestnuts form in favourable years. Good coppice tree. Needs an open sunny position to fruit well.

We can only sell bare-rooted/transplanted plants when they are dormant. Depending on the weather this is normally between November and March. Orders for bare-rooted plants will be despatched in November. We only charge for goods paid by credit/debit cards when they are despatched.
