Crab Apples in autumn on John Downie.

An erect deciduous tree which becomes wide spreading with age. 1-1.5 inch (2.5-4cm) pink budded single white flowers appear in profusion in May and these are followed by large conical yellow crab apples which are flushed red. As these are so prolific the tree is a picture of colour in autumn. The fruit is considered to be the best for jelly and wine making. It is self-fertile and is an excellent pollinator for fruiting apples. TREE 20ft x 15ft (6m x 4.6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 25-30ft (7.6-9m).
