An elegant, hardy, deciduous shrub which will make a colourful informal hedge, or can be grown as a specimen shrub or small tree. Large clusters of deliciously scented flowers in May and June, which are attractive to butterflies. Lilacs should be grown in fertile, humus-rich, well drained soil, and they are particularly suited to soils with a chalky nature.
An outstanding variety with masses of semi-double claret-red flowers shaded with lilac-pink in late May.
HEDGE Trim back after flowering if necessary. For hedges 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m). Plant 3ft (90cm) apart.
SHRUB 20ft x 12ft (6m x 3.7m) in 20 years, ultimate height 20ft (6m).
