A large suckering deciduous shrub which will make a colourful informal hedge, or can be grown as a specimen shrub or small tree. Masses of richly scented pale mauve flower heads in May, attractive to butterflies. Any fertile soil, full sun preferred but will tolerate partial shade. HEDGE Trim back after flowering if necessary. For hedges 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m). Plant 3ft (90cm) apart. TREE/SHRUB 20ft x 12ft (6m x 3.7m) in 20 years, ultimate height 20ft (6m).
