TOMATOES

Soil & Site: If grown in borders, improve the soil by adding compost and a small amount of Growmore to the soil. Avoid over-feeding the soil and certainly refrain from using the same border soil for tomatoes year after year. Better still, grow in cropping bags – allow two plants per bag or grow in 9 ins (23cm) pots filled with a multi-purpose potting compost.
Spacing: Outdoors allow 18 ins (45cm) between plants and 36 ins (90cm) between rows. Allow 24 ins (60cm) between plants under glass.
Special tips: Cordon (indeterminate) variety needs their side shoots removing to achieve a single stem. These side shoots appear where the leaf stalks join the stem and these should be removed when they are about 1 ins (2.5cm) long.
Bush (determinate) varieties do not need their side shoots removing as they form flowers on these and are part of the characteristic of the variety.
Water regularly in dry conditions to keep the soil moist – they need to be kept uniformly moist to avoid blossom end rot or fruit splitting. Liquid feed with a high potassium fertiliser every 10-14 days once the first truss (cluster) of fruit has set for outdoor grown plants, twice weekly for greenhouse crops.

Our range of vegetables will be available for mail order from May 2009. We still have a wide range available for collection from the Garden Centre.
