Climbers

CLIMBERS trained on walls or fences have two major beneficial effects, firstly to cover an otherwise plain or unsightly area and secondly to soften and give life to an inanimate surface. Listed below are some plants sold purely as climbers, but many fruit trees and bushes can also be trained as wall cover plants, along with a few species in the hedging section. A wider range of climbers is available to those who can call at the Garden Centre to collect them.

POSITION All plants listed will grow in a sunny or partially shady position but those which will grow well under other conditions are noted.

SIZE The approximate sizes quoted apply to height or spread as appropriate if left unpruned. Many plants can be pruned regularly to restrain their size.

SIZES OFFERED The sizes for climbers are sometimes less than that quoted as they are often pruned back at the appropriate time during the dormant period, in order to encourage better, bushier growth next spring.

SOIL Unless otherwise stated the plants listed will all grow in any reasonable soil.

CLEMATIS AS A SCREEN/HEDGE. Go to Top of Page

Montana Clematis can be grown to make a very effective screen to use rather than a hedge. In spring, when the Clematis is in flower, the effect will be breathtaking both from visual impact and perfume. Erect strong trellis work 5ft or 6ft (150cm or 180cm) high along the line needed for the screen, and put one Montana Clematis every 6-10ft (1.5-3m). The Clematis will very quickly smother the trellis and will just need occasional trimming.
