MAIDEN TREES These are young trees suitable for growing into bush, half standard, fan-trained, cordon, pyramid, espalier, spindlebush or other trained forms.
FAN AND ESPALIER TREES. For best results we recommend buying maidens and training them. Ready trained trees are available for collection or local delivery from the Garden Centre.
ROOTSTOCKS Trees are supplied on rootstocks best suited to the form and variety of tree offered and able to thrive in a wide range of soil and conditions. Maiden and bush apple trees are mostly on M26 or MM106, semi-dwarfing stocks. Half standards are mainly on M26 or MM106 and full standards are on a vigorous rootstock. Cider apples are on a semi-vigorous stock. Very occasionally we may supply a substitute stock of similar nature. The rootstock will be marked on the plant label.
HALF STANDARD, FULL STANDARD AND MINARETTES These are available only for collection from the Garden Centre. We also have trained apples and minarette (columnar) apples available. Please telephone or send us an e-mail for more information.
POLLINATION All apples fruit better with a pollinator, but those which are reasonably self-fertile are indicated in the plant description. To select a pollinator choose another variety of apple in the same group, previous group or following group (a table showing this is in our Apple Pollination Guide).
Those which are described as triploids provide little pollen and should not be used as pollinators. They require a non-triploid apple to pollinate them, and if you wish to have fruit on the pollinator this too will need another pollinator. Hence you will need three trees to provide enough pollen.
Crab apples such as Golden Hornet and John Downie also are good pollinators for all apples. In areas where there are many apple trees growing it may not be necessary to plant a pollinator.
SPIRAL TREE GUARDS From experience on the Nursery young apple and pear trees are very susceptible to rabbit damage in the winter, so we would recommend protecting fruit trees with spiral tree guards if rabbits are a problem in your area. |

Crab Apple TreesCrab apples are self-fertile and Golden Hornet and John Downie are good pollinators for fruiting apples. |
Family apple trees have three different, compatible varieties grafted onto one tree, and are therefore ideal for a small garden where space is at a premium.
